Chapter Four

The Lightening Chamber

After the strange encounter at the tower of the Trade Prince, little else of note happened in the city. Pagul was an eerily quiet place, with nothing but the deafening sound of wind for entertainment. It had been a handful of moons since Farenda and her veterans had estabilished themselves in the Trade Prince’s tower. Originally, they only occupied the top and bottom of the tower, preferring to leave everything else to decay. However, curiosity got the better of a few. Also, the welcoming room at the tower base becoming stuffy and cramped. A few intrepid groups decided to make their own quarters a little further up the tower. At the tower base, it was a large room that made up the entrance chamber. Yet, it did not provide ample accomodations to over three-hundred men. With the rest of the tower open to settlement, a small force of veterans decided to make other parts their home.

On the other hand, none wished to venture beyond the protective building of the tower, and its lower fortifications. In addition, a few excursions had been made into other parts of the city, but no new discoveries had come of their trips. It was unfortunate that no food, nor drink, was to be found among the empty cellars and storehouses of the city. Still, despite setbacks, none gave up hope. This city was vast. It was certain to contain an uncountable number of hidden places and treasures. Naturally, every group that went to scout the city always left with hopes of finding a secret cash of wine, or some stout Hohen black beer. Perhaps, they might even discover a few crates of preserved food stuffs, salted pork, or even some dried herbs for a pipe. Eitherway, the scouting parties always returned with their hopes crushed, but promising a brighter future to the scouts that would leave on the morrow.

After many moons of failure in their searches, the situation at Pagul had become desperate. There was nothing left to sustain them in the city, and they would soon need to make a difficult decision about their resources. The General and her commanders convened a hasty meeting, in which they decided to send out scouting parties beyond the city walls. They selected a few hunting groups to forage into the surrounding wilderness, hoping to spot any wayward animals that might pass by. Even a single hare or squirrel could bolster the food provisions, even adding some flavor to a stew. In addition, a group was selected for the menial task of water collection. However, rather than venturing the short way to the lake, through the serpentine pass, the water bearers decided to take from a nearby stream. The stream passed by a few miles from the outer walls of the Upper District.

Either hauling lake water up from the lower quarter, or taking it from a distant source, the water bearers would have to carry it themselves. They had no beasts of burden to assist in the transport.
